Nitrogen gas is commonly used for pipeline pressure testing because it is non-flammable and non-toxic.  Nitrogen is also an inert gas, which means it does not react or undergo any chemical reaction, making it much safer to use for pipes and the people handling the testing. 

Additionally, gaseous nitrogen can be safely used to assess plumbing work, check the integrity of pipeline networks, and test vessels for leaks.
